Pedalling away from the Climate Crisis

This year, as wildfires blazed across the Pacific Northwest, floods swept through western Germany and Madrid experienced record breaking snowfall, we were confronted by the reality that the climate crisis is both very real and tangible.

The stark warnings of recent decades can no longer be ignored. The effects of climate change are happening before our eyes. And one of the worst parts? It’s disproportionately affecting those developing countries. From the reduction in Tajikistan’s glaciers to East Africa’s agricultural driven-economy being vulnerable to droughts, some of the largest carbon producing nations are not feeling the very real and devastating impacts of climate change.

With COP26 kicking off over the weekend, Boris Johnson commented that the conference “must be a turning point for humanity”. And whether you loathe him or love him, the man - on this particular issue - has got a point. It’s time for us all to take stock and do as much as we can to reduce our footprint.

As a bunch of cycling nuts and keen environmentalists, it doesn’t take much for us to spout the merits of cycling to any and all who will listen! And, just like Boris, we reckon we’ve got a good point too!

Research from the University of Oxford found that those who switched one car trip per day to bicycle cut their carbon footprint by 0.5 tonnes a year. Across the globe, each person emits on average 2 tonnes of carbon per year; imagine just how vast our impact could be should we wave goodbye to a carbon-filled commute, and instead jump onto two wheels.

It’s no longer enough to occasionally turn off a light switch (although that’s a solid start). If we’re to mitigate impending catastrophes, we need to alter our mindset and lifestyles. Whether that’s drastically cutting out single use plastic, or avoiding public transport and cycling through the winter.

And should you choose the latter, we’ll be here to keep you moving. We’ve just launched our winter services, to make pedaling throughout the colder months seem a little more appealing. We’ve got discounts across everything you’ll be needing. With half price on brake pad fittings, brake servicing and free winter tyre fitting, we believe that if you’re wanting to cut the carbon and get out on the roads, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg. We’ve also got our winter service going on, costing £60 and including complimentary fitting on all brakes, tyres and lights. All prices are labour only, of course!

Through fettle, we’ve learnt one of the biggest barriers to cycling is the faff of keeping your two-wheeled steed safe and roadworthy. By modernising the repair process and putting the service back into bike servicing, we’re able to practice what we preach, getting more cyclists on the road and helping look after the environment in which we live.
